As an Education Team we are dedicated to centring the voices and experiences of young Black and POC people in our work and anti-racist practice.
This means empowering young people to make informed decisions about the best course of action in their schools. Our education programme is designed to work holistically within the structure of a school to ensure anti-racist change is student-led, informed and centres harm reduction.
At IYS we believe in making long-term, sustainable anti-racist change within schools. We meet schools and staff where they are at, establishing connections and relationships with staff and students that ensure a tailored approach which address the complex ways racism manifests systemically within the Scottish education system.
The programme itself includes an Anti-Racist Pro-Black Educator being placed at the school for one day a week. Educators are able to work with schools to carry out the following activities, amongst anything else agreed between the educator and school:
- Anti-Racist Pro Black Classes
- Office Hours and 1-1 guidance & mentoring
- Structural EDI consultation with the partner school
- Anti-racist Lunchtime Club
- Departmental and faculty specific review
- Development of curriculum and teaching resources & methods, including decolonisation support
- Inservice inputs on anti-racism and decolonisation
Educators each have their own individualised approaches and methods of implementing these anti-racist practices, but the team’s values and commitments to anti-racism is consistent across schools.
